How to Research

A guide that explains the basic tenets of research and how to do it using various resources.

Taking notes

How should we take notes from a book when doing research?

This is what we do:

1)     We type or write the book title at the top of the page

Maybe we add the name of the author too.

2)     We read the information and then write or type it on our page, in our own words.

Writing things in our own words means that we learn our information three times!

We learn it once when we read it.

We learn it once more when we think about it.

We learn it once more when we write it down in your own words.

3)     After writing down a piece of information in our words, we put the page number of the

book next to it, so that we can find that information again if we want to read more or if we have another question to answer.

How should we take notes from the Internet when doing research?

This is what we do:

1)     We type or write the name of the Website page at the top of the page

We also add the URL (the website address)

2)     We read the information and then write or type it on our page, in our own words.

Writing things in our own words means that we learn our information three times!

We learn it once when we read it.

We learn it once more when we think about it.

We learn it once more when we write it down in your own words.

3)     After writing down a piece of information in our words, we put the date that we looked at it

next to it.  Information on the internet can change every minute and so we want to be able to show everyone when we looked at our information.

How should we take notes when we are interviewing or speaking with someone to get information?

This is what we do:

1)     We type or write the name of the person we are speaking with at the top of the page

If we are getting information from our mother or our father we do not write 'mum' or 'dad'.  We write their full name.  This is good research.

2)     We pay attention to what they are saying and we take notes as the person is speaking

with us.  We put down what they are saying so that we can use the information in our project.  Sometimes we can record our conversation so that we can put down our notes later.

We always ask for permission before we record someone we are speaking with.  That is being principled.

3)     After we are finished speaking with the person we put down the date on which we

spoke.  This is very important.
